Terracotta and clay-toned plaster bring warmth without shouting. They work especially well with southern light and pale stone floors.

In smaller rooms we often go darker on purpose. Olive tiles in a shower room or a charcoal bedroom feel enveloping rather than cramped.

Whatever the colour, we pair it with natural wood so it never feels cold.
